Munkhchimeg Culture clip In australia, many families live a long way from town , so the nearest school is often very far away. For this reason , many children attend a very different kind of school. It is called the School of the Air because the students have lessons over the radio .Most areas have a school like this for cchildren between 4 and 12 years old. They study aat home, but they are still members of a class .The children have a radio lessons with their class three times a week . Each lesson is about 30 minutes . Students also have a 10 minute private lesson with their teacher once a week. The school provides the radio , books, videos and other resources. The children send their work to the teacher once a week . The taechers prepare the lessons and the childrens parents help them to do their work at home. Teachers and students also communicate by phone , fax and email and the teacher visits children at home at least once a year . The School of the Air may sound like a strange idea . For the isolalated students of Australia its the only way to learn. English teacher. B. Munkhchimeg Healthy living 1.Do you eat fast food as one of your daily meals ?Many people eat fast food for some, if not most, of their meals .However , i strongly believe that people shouldnt include so much fast food in their diets.2.First of all , fast food is very high in fat, which is harmful to our bodies . For example , eating a high amount of fat makes your blood thicker. In turn , this makes it harder for your heart to pump.3.Secondly, fast food diets dont contain much fresh fruit or many vegetables. Because of this, fast food does not provide peo[ple with a balanced diet .As a result ,our brains and bodies do not work as well we feel tired and stressed.4.On the other hand, fast food is not so bad if people dont eat these types of meals very often. For instance, eating fast food once a week would not be considered too unhealthy . You must be careful, though, that once a week does not become once a day!5.In conclusion , fast food meals are a rather unhealthy choice and lack essential nutrients , such as vitamins and minerals , that our body needfs . The way I see it, people must eat different types of food to stay healthy and fit.

The capital of mongolia is Ulaanbaatar, a city whit a long and rich history. Set in the rolling foothill of the Bogd Mountain range, on the banks of the majestic Tuul river, Ulaanbaatar is the gateway to Mongolia. Ulaanbaatar, historically known as Urga, was originally established in 1639 as a nomadic encampment, which shifted from place until it settlet in its present location in 1778. The city, situated at an altitude of 1,351 meters above sea level, stretches from east to west across the Tuul River valley. It has a population of around 800 000 and a surface area of 135,800 hectares. Holy mountains surround it the Bogd Uul Mountain to the south, the Songino Mountain to the west, the Bayanzurkh Mountain to the east and the Chingeltei Mountain to the north. The city has the only international airport in the country and the Trans-Siberian railway crosses Mongolia from north to south, stopping in Ulaanbaatar, connecting Moscow and Beijing.

Gandantegchinlen Monastery

Gandan is the largest and most significant monastery in Mongolia and one of Ulaanbaatar’s most interesting sights. Built in the mid 19th century, it is the only monastery where Buddhist services continued during the communist years. Temples are dlocked by visitors during religious services that start at 10 a.m and last until mid day. Most important part of a monastery is the Megjid Janraiseg temple.

The Megjid Janraiseg (Avalokiteshvara) Temple was built in 1911-1912 to celebrate the end of Manchu domination and, it is said, to heal the Bogd Gegeen from blindness. It is in a mixed Chinese and Tibetan style and inside is the 25,6 meter and 20 ton Avalokiteshvara-janraiseg statue. The deity was consecrated in 1996, is hollow and contains a storehouse of precious items including sutras, medicinal herbs, bundles of Buddhist mantras and even a fully furnished ger. The statue was built with donations of Mongolian people as symbol of Buddist revival in the mid 1990’s.

Zaisan Hill Memorial

Located to the south of Ulaanbaatar, Zaisan Hill Memorial was erected on the 50th anniversary of the Communist Revolution and honors tha Soviet and Mongolian soldiers who died in WWII in the figth against Japan and Nazi Germany. Next to the monumental statue of the soldier, a mosaic composition on a large circular panel in reinforsed concrete illustrates the theme of frienship between Mongol and Soviet peoples. In the center of it a large granite bowl holds an eternal flame. A good view can be had over the capital.

Winter palace of Bogd Khan

Built between 1893 and 1903, the winter Palace of Bogd Khan was the home of the Mongolia’s last king Javzun Damba Khutagt VIII. This complex of temples and houses contains a number of Buddhist artworks and the private collection of the Bogd Khan, composed of gifts from rulers and kings from all over the world. The artworks displayed here were made by the top Mongolian, Tibetan and chinese master-sculptors of the 18th and 19th centuries and represent the gods of the Buddhist pantheon.

Natural History Museum

Located near the city center the museum displays exhibits on the geography, geology, botany, fauna and paleontology of Mongolia. Among the treasures on display are 800 objects from the lower Cambrian Age (500 million years ago) to the Quaternary Age (10,000 to 15,000 years ago), including fossils of vertabrates, plants, leaf prints, dinosaurs and mammals. The specimens of dinosaur skeletons and bones vary in size from a few centimeters to over 30 meters tall, and several are to be found only in Mongolia.

Choijin Lama Temple Museum

This complex of temples was built between 1904 and 1908 for the Choijin Lama (a monastic title) Lubsankhaidav, the State Oracle and younger brother of the eighth Bogd Gegeen, and is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Mongolia. This is the only museum where all religious objects are kept ready for Buddhist chanting ceremonies and this is why it is called a temple museum. The museum is famous for its collection of Buddhist artworks, original silk icons and tsam dancing masks.

Terelj National Park (Khan Khentii Protected Area)

Terelj is the most popular destination in the third biggest protected area in Mongolia, the Khan Khentii Protected Area. This is the motherland of Chinggis Khan, and contains numerous important historical and cultural sites.Three major river systems have their sources in the protected area; the Tuul river, which flows into Russia’s Lake Baikal and continues to the Arctic Ocean, and the Onon and Kherlen rivers, which flow east to join the Amur before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Over 1,150 species of plants, characteristic of both taiga and steppe, have been identified. Over 50 mammal species, 253 species of birds and 34 species of fish make their home in the Khan Khentii Protected Area. Situated 80km northeast of Ulaanbaatar, Terelj is famous for its unique granite rock formations and fristine alpine scenery, and is a popular destination for tourists based in the capital and for Mongolians on weekend trips. The park lies at an altitude of 1600m and offers activities such as hiking, river rafting, horseback riding, skiing and rock climbing. Terelj is a landscape of transition from Siberian taiga forest to grass steppe. In spring and summer the lush meadows are carfeted with wildflowers, and the mountain pine forests and broad streams make this one of the most beautiful areas in Mongolia.

Karakorum- The Ancient City and Erdene Zuu Monastery

Situated on the banks of the river Orkhon, the site of the imperial capital Karakorum was chosen by Chinggis Khan in 1220. The city, capital of thje largest land empire the world has ever known, served as a supply point for the Mongol armies and was a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural place in its time. Today almost nothing remains of the once-great city, but a sense of its grandeur and importance can still be felt by the visitor. Karakorum was located on trade routes and was surrounded by walls with four gates, each with its own market. The nearby Erdene Zuu Monastery was the first Buddhist monastery built in Mongolia, constructed using stones and bricks from the ruins of the ancient city in 1586. During the communist purges of the 1930s, many of the temples in the monastery complex were destroyed, but the remaining temples and stupas are some of the best remaining exemples of Mongolian Buddhist architecture. Erdene Zuu is now both a museum and a functioning monastery.

Manzushir Monastery

Manzushir Monastery is located in the soutern entrance of Bogd Khaan National Park. This 18th century monastic complex was left in ruins after the communist purges of the 1930s. A new temple has been built next to the ruins of the old temples and serves as a museum with pictures and artifacts from the original monastery. by the ruins there are also some gers, a restaurant and a natural museum. The surrounding area is ferfect for walking in green woods, meadows and clear water mountain streams.

Hustain Nuruu Protected Area

The last wild horse in the world, the Przewalski horse, or takhi in Mongolian, has been successfully reintroduced inti the wild in the Hustain Nuruu Reserve in Tov province. The 90,000 ha reserve was established in 1993 and is located only 100km from the capital. The landscape rangers from grassland steppe, and dawn and dusk are the best times for visitors to see the wild horses, deer and gazelle. Within the reserve there are a number of Turkic graves and stone men, or hun chuluu, and the Ongot archaeological complex is nearby.

Horgo Mountain and Terhiin Tsagaan Nuur Lake

Horgo Mountain is a dormant volcano located on the east shore of Lake Terhiin Tsagaan (2100m above sea level). Horgiin Togoo is the highest volcano crater in the Orkhon River Valley. From the summit of this basalt-covored mountain one has a splendid view over the whole region and the lake. The volcanic crater of the Togoo Uul is 200m wide and 100m deep. The northern slope is covered with Siberian Larch. One of the most interesting sigths of Horgo is the so-called Basalt Ger, which leis on the southern side. It is a large solidified bubble of lava whit a broken piece on one side, which makes a natural door. The height of some of these stone gers is 1.7m. Several other ancient volcanoes are not far from the Horgo. Lake Terhiin Tsagaan was formed when volcanic lava dammed the Suman River, cutting a large gorge through the basalt. It is an astonishingly beautiful lake, 20km long, 16km wide and 4 to 10 meters deep with an altitude of 2,060m above sea level.

Gobi – the Southern Mongolia

One of the most famous and exotic areas in the world, the Gobi Desert region has a history of adventurers and explorers. Known to be one of the harshest environments on the planet, with extreme temperature and seasonal changes, the Gobi is surprisingly full of wildlife, such as gazelle, wild ass or Hulan, wild camel or hawtgai, antelopes and the endangered Gobi bear or mazaalai. The Gobi Desert was the site of some of the most famous dinosaur fossil discoveries, including the world’s first dinosaur egg nests, some of which can be seen in Ulaanbaatar’s Natural History Museum. The majority of Mongolia’s populiation of Bactrain camels lives in this region and visitors can take a camel trek and see the Flaming Cliffs, the huge sand dunes of the Hongor Els or the remarkable gorge at Yolyn Am (Lammergier Vally).

Yol Valley

Yol (Yol-Lammergeir) Valley is the narrow canyon of a river that flows through Zuun Saikhan Mountain (2,816m above sea level). The gorge has sheer rock walls with a height of 200m in the central part of the gorge. It has been protected since 1965 and has an area of 70 square kilometers of strictly protected area. A spring two or three kilometers long winds ats way through the defile and freezes anto a thick corridor of ice that stretches along for a distance. During the rainy season, rain falls at the summit of the mountain and flows down into the sheer canyon, forming waterfalls. Only two people can pass through the narrowest part at the same time and you will see only a blue line of a sky. Argali and ibex are local inhabitants of this place. A small museum marks the entrance to the protected zone and provides information on the petrified trees, fauna and flora of the Gobi.

Dinosaur skeletons and eggs

Bayanzag is located in Bulgan sum, and archaelogical finds of the Paleolithic Era, which are displayed in Natural History Museum in Ulaanbaatar, were found here. In the west the site is better known as the Flaming Cliffs, so named by explorer Roy Champan Andrews. In the same area he discovered petrified forests, remains of mammals and in paticular the skeleton of a hornless rhinoceros, the largest known mammal in the world. Other finds in this location were complete dinosaur skeletons, eggs with a diameter of 10 – 15 cm and hatchlings from the Cretaceous Period.

Hongor Els Sand Dunes

Hongor Els sand dunes stretch for an extraordinary 180km and are 15-20m wide and high. The dunes lie on hte northern part of the mountains of Sevree and Zuulun.
